DermShare Search-assisted Early Detection of Melanoma
Melanoma
is a skin cancer of the pigment-producing cells of the skin that
afflicts over 68,000 Americans each year, with over 8,500 dying from
the disease each year. Because
melanoma starts thin and then with time grows deeper into the skin
and finally metastasizes, early detection is a crucial aspect of
improved melanoma survival. This figure illustrates the importance of
early detection of melanoma:

Our
goal is to create a cheap, easy to use software tool called DermShare
that will assist primary care physicians (PCPs) in more accurately detecting melanoma.
It is a web-based tool, built on the
Diamond framework, that can
be run on a standard desktop, laptop or tablet in a physician's
office.
Our goal is to make DermShare easily integrated into the regular patient
care workflow of a PCP, thus simplifying its regular use in clinical
practice.
